ROME DAY THREE: FOOTBALL AND HISTORY

Post available in English and Romanian
We started our Ancient Rome tour with a visit to the Imperial Forum. The Roman ruins are located next to Piazza Venezia, and you can only visit them from the street. We admired the majestic ruins and also Trajan’s Column, which basically depicts how the Romanian people was born.

THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND OF DELOS

Famous for the decadent lifestyle and night long parties, Mykonos does not offer much in terms of history. There are charming stories and the Greek mythology places Mykonos as the place where Zeus fought against the Titans, but it’s not nearly as rich in history as Rhodes, our destination from last year.

Even so, 30 minutes away by boat from this lively island lies Delos, an ancient cosmopolitan civilization, that flourished for nearly a millennium before slowly descending into anonymity. Recognized as the birthplace of the two gods Apollo and Artemis, this cult island slowly became a rich port and an interesting location for powerful civilizations. Trading was a popular activity here and many rich people from all the corners of the world settled here in ancient times. There are traces of Greek, Roman, Syrian and Egyptian cultures, all merged into this tiny yet amazing island.

Paved with gneiss, Delos is one of the brightest places on earth. Many have gone further to say that being in the center of the Cyclade Islands this is also a powerful spot, filled with immense cosmic energy.

STEP INTO HISTORY

During my first days in Rhodes I didn’t know where to look first; to my left and my right, wonders of the ancient world, buildings that looked frozen in time and made me feel like a time – traveler. The gorgeous blue sea was always in the picture, and above I could always see an incredible sky because it barely rains during the summer in Rhodes (to be more accurate, it never rains). And yes, even when you look down you will be amazed. With each step, there are beautiful mosaics, crafted out of sea stones, which not only are a sight for the eyes, they also offer a foot massage. Don’t wear heels or light shoes, you’ll need a thicker sole to walk the old streets.

As you can see, no mosaic looks like the others, and I only managed to capture a few of them.

RHODES, DAY 6

Post available in English and Romanian
If you’ve read my blog before, then you know I am very passionate about sports. And how could I have missed an ancient sports site in my vacation? Outside the town, you can find Monte Smith (a hill named after a British general) – here you can visit the ancient stadium, a small amphitheater and the temple of Apollo, all of them are included in a natural park, with free entrance. We arrived here with the hop on hop off bus, the station was just 5 minutes away from our hotel. There are two buses (red and yellow), with an hourly schedule. One ride is 15 euros in the morning, or 12 euros by noon. A ticket is available for the day. You can also take this ride in a tourist train for 7 euros for a one-way ticket. We were the only tourists who descended from the bus to visit the site, and for an hour we admired the ancient ruins. The stadium is well preserved, especially the spectator seating. From here, you can continue to visit Rhodes by bus or train, both cover the most important touristic objectives.

RHODES, DAY 5

Post available in English and Romanian
Time flies here in Rhodes, it’s already our 5-th day here. Today, we explored all the wonders in the old town. Our steps took us on the famous Knights Street (Ippoton), which kept its original charm over the years. Once, this street housed the knights, now it’s host for many ministerial buildings.
